Motive

Every fan is wondering why Doctor Who is moving to Sunday, or maybe not. Well, that does not matter, but what does matter is that Doctor Who is moving to Sunday night. In this article from Radio Times. Huw Fullerton discusses the motive for the move.

The article states that both Stephen Moffat and Peter Capaldi feel the show’s ratings suffered due to not having a set time slot. How true is that? Well, when fans know when their favorite show is on they will sit down and watch it. It also means they can plan to be free at that time and are less likely to miss the show.

Peter Capaldi makes a great point about Doctor Who when he says, “I see a lot of kids and a lot of families and these families who all love Doctor Who want to sit down and watch it together. I used to do that with my daughter when it came back so it has to be on at a time that’s reasonable for them to do that.”(1)

Folks Doctor Who is an iconic sci-fi program and deserves better treatment. Why would anyone put it where people cannot plan to sit and watch. Doctor Who is a program families love to gather around the television and take in all the great action. Honestly, what the BBC did during the last twelve or thirteen years has hindered the growth of the fan base in a way. The move to a set time Sunday night will do wonders for the ratings.

When a television considers a time slot for each program they provide, much thought needs to go into where they are placing said show. Networks like the BBC are trying to make money. So, they need to air their most popular shows where they get good ratings. The fandom of Doctor Who requires a set time slot. Fans want to watch their favorite sci-fi program every week. With that in mind, having a specific time to watch is great.

The BBC made the right decision to move Doctor Who to Sunday. If this works out the way the BBC hopes, ratings will be on the rise. Fans will love the fact the show will be on at the same time every week.
