K9

K9 and Company

Yesterday is a day that some Doctor Who fans may remember. On that day 35 years ago, the first spinoff of Doctor Who, K9 and company airs. This of course began a journey with the show we see today. Since K9 and Company aired there have been other spinoffs of Doctor Who.

My personal view of the show is very limited. I can say this because I actually never saw the pilot. From my understanding, the show never became a series. Which really tends to be a drag. I always loved to watch the serials with the Fourth Doctor and K9. The are some of the greatest. It takes quite and imagination to devise a pet or a computer like K9.

Another great thing I find about this pilot is that Sarah Jane Smith was in it. Hint the title a A Girl’s Best Friend. K9 is given to her and he becomes her friend and protector. This of course is seen later in the show when the DOctor comes to repair it. Therefore he gets to see his long time friend again.

There has been five years since Doctor Fans see Sarah Jane before the K9 and Company pilot. She is a very familiar face and to me is the best choice for the lead actress. She and the Doctor make a great team while they are together in the mid 70s. But everyone needs to move on and do other things. I hate that Sarah Jane leaves the show, but it would have been nice to see her in a spinoff with K9.

Before I see this on Facebook did I realize it has been 35 years since this pilot airs. Never having the chance to watch it kind of hinders my view of it, bu ti co admit that at the time of the making of this pilot there is not much moving of BBC shows to America. Better not at least as soon as they are now.

In the end this may have become a very popular TV program, but no one will ever know. I just hate that Elisabeth Sladen is no longer around to do any Doctor Who.
