Vicki

Vicki

Well, I really do not know what to say about this Doctor Who companion. Since, the viewing of classic episodes from the first two Doctors are few and far between. Vicki is not one who comes to mind when I think about companions. But she does appear on the in 1965 in the serial The Rescue. Now her time with the Doctor is not one of great length. Therefore, there is not a lot to see of her. That and the fact the BBC wiped episodes or destroyed episodes. But now that I think about it I do remember briefly a scene or two which I saw.

Her demeanor I cannot comment on nor her personality. From the research I did I find she was the Doctor’s companion for part of season 2 and 3.(1) Vicki is a young teenager when she meets the Doctor and maybe the reason he allows her to travel with him is the fact that Susan has left him. Now the Doctor is not one for emotions nor does he lead anyone to believe he needs help, but there is a possibility that he is missing Susan. As a result Vicki fits the bill as someone to replace the void left in his life. Now, I am not sying this is the case but it makes some sense. Especially if were human.

She only appears in 38 episodes(2) so her legacy is not as deep as some of the other companions but then again more than some. I cannot tell you whether I truly like her or not because I think I have only seen maybe on serial with her in it. Now, please do not quote me on this, but that seems right. What I believe is that the only serial which I saw her is The Dalek Invasion of Earth which is Ian and Barbara’s last episode, but not sure.

Vicki the 25th century orphan girl grows on the Doctor and he wishes to rescue her form danger. So, as he always does he allows her to join the TARDIS crew. This maybe a chance for the Doctor to rid himself of the loneliness he feels from not having his granddaughter with him any longer. As I think about this, here is an old man who travels with his granddaughter for who know how long. Then she falls in love and he sees it is best she stays with her love and now he is lonely. As a result. the Doctor has a soft heart for a young girl.

Guess who this young girl is, Vicki. I can understand the reason why he lets her join the crew. She is alone and does not have any family. The on the other side, the Doctor is missing his own family. Therefore this makes for the perfect connection for both the Doctor and Vicki.

In my experience as a dad and granddad, I can see the connection here. I know that the Doctor is not human, but his race is humanoid and will most likely have similar feelings for family. The incredible thing here is the fact that this even comes to mind. The Doctor is usually very stoic and does not let his feelings show. There are times in the new series where we see emotions like this, but the classic series not so much.

There is more to add to this so I am going to have another post about this mystery girl for me, Vicki.
