Second Male Companion

Second Male Companion

Well, Steven Taylor can’t become the Doctor’s companion unless the Doctor first meets him. Of course the only way the Doctor can meet him is through time and space travel. Steven’s time with the Doctor is only for about a year. As a result, fans don’t really get to know him very well.

Personally, I do not know much about the Doctor’s second male companion. I say this one because I have not been able to watch many of the First Doctor’s serial. What seems to always be the case the Doctor will not travel alone. When he does what happens is not good. He seems to always need some one to help him, but they really don’t help him that much. I sometimes wonder why the showrunners have companions for the Doctor anyway. He is a genius and knows everything to do and can take care of himself. I suppose the companions are just that for companionship. Maybe he gets lonely,, whether he will admit it or not. I also believe the companions make the show better.

Peter Purves plays Steven Taylor from 1965-1966. (1) As a fan, I always wish some of these companions stay for a long period of time. In the case of Steven though, I cannot give a good opinion because most of his serial are not complete. That and BBC America does not show classic episodes very often, especially the First and Second Doctor.

Steven does not enter the TARDIS crew as others. He is really sneaky and stows away on the TARDIS and is later discovered by the Doctor. The Doctor and the TARDIS crew meet Steven on the planet  Mechanus and he has been there for two years. The spaceship he is piloting crash lands and leaves him stranded. (2)

Having a strong will can put you at odds with the Doctor. Especially, the First Doctor. Steven’s strong will may get in the way of helping the Doctor, but I do not know if that happens or not. A strong will can also help the Doctor.(3) So, it goes both ways. Steven seems like the type of person who will both strive and possibly case problems for the Doctor. But I guess they find a way to coexist and not fight. This is something which I cannot attest to since I have not seen any of the serials with Steven.

Something else which I find interesting is the fact that Steven is the first male companion to travel alone with the Doctor.(4) I did not know this until I read it on Fandom. I believe that Steven is good for the Doctor for one because he values human life. He like the Doctor cares for humans and whether they live or die.

As the second male companion he does travel alone with the Doctor but because of the deaths of the people during the Massacre of St. Bartholomew’s Eve is almost leaves the Doctor.(5) No long after this Steven leaves the TARDIS crew in hopes of helping two factions out by getting peace between the two.(6)

There is not allot of stuff to find out about Steven Taylor and I have not seen much. SO, I gave you as much of my view as I can. I would love to see more of every serial so I can get to know more about some of the companions from the first two Doctors.
