Gender
For a start, changing the gender of the Doctor does not bother this fan. But there are many Doctor Who fans who say they will not watch Doctor Who with a female Doctor. Well, in this article by Peter Dyke and Ed Gleave, they explain the change from male to female will barely get mentioned.
If you remember, as Peter Capaldi changes into Jodie Whittaker the TARDIS explodes into many pieces. And the last thing we see is the Doctor falling to earth. Well, everyone is wondering how the Doctor will survive. So, showrunner, Chris Chibnall says the focus of the first episode is going to be to answer the question, “how will the Doctor survive the fall?”
Ok, yeah some fans are wondering how the Doctor will manage a fall from millions of miles above the earth, but how do you deal with the gender change. The change is a big deal for many fans. Some fans say they are not watching the show anymore. While others are on the edge of watching or not watching. So, we wonder how Chibnall will deal with the issue. Of course, he would say, “it is petty and bypassed.” He is the showrunner and needs to be positive about everything.
Some fans will want to deal with the change immediately. Therefore why not deal with on the screen. Then again one has to wonder how you can’t deal with in the first episode because surviving the fall will be one aspect of that episode. So, you are telling me, the Doctor is not going to deal with the gender change.
All fans are different, but you can bet there are some concerns from all fans. The reason for saying this is because there are some who don’t know much about the new regime. I have to admit I am one of them. I never paid much attention to writers of stories, so I don’t remember who wrote what. Mostly I watch and get buried in what happens in the story and whether the story is good or not.
Okay, we now have a female Doctor, and yes, this will be an issue for some fans. It is only an issue for me if Whittaker does not do a good job and Chibnall’s work is not good either. Personally, the gender change is not petty and bypassed, but we need to objective and not judgmental. Let’s wait and see what happens. No one knows how things are going to be. Just because of certain things we know doesn’t mean things will be that way.
