Revived Series
Doctor Who will be being again in 2005, but the revived series did not have a Cybermen story until 2006. While the showrunner does not fill an episode with Cybermen action until 2006, a head of a Cyberman is seen a private museum in the episode Dalek.(1)
For me, if your beginning to make Doctor Who again, you can’t leave out the Cybermen. They to me are as much apart of Doctor Who as the Daleks. Consequently, the revived series must have Cybermen! I understand that if there is a showrunner who does not know the show handles this they may not return. In the case of the revival though, Russell T Davies is in charge of the revived series. So, I will think it is a given for the Cybermen to be apart of the show.
I have always thought the the Cybermen were from the planet Mondas, the twin planet of Earth, but this is all different in the revived series. The first time we see them in a two part story, Cybus Industries are making them. This too me is different and maybe not what I really want. The show is interesting and I suppose the fact the Doctor lands in a parallel universe is cool. Come on, why not use the old classic series planet Mondas and Telos the adopted home as the origin. I guess the idea is to infuse new life into the character of the Cybermen. I really do not know why the writers and showrunner changes the origin. It is okay and I will have to live with it.
The next the Cybermen appear is in an episode with the Daleks. Now this was engenius. How they thought to bring these two enemies together in one story is something I cannot tell you. How about the transporting of Cybermen t London by the Daleks just so that they can declare war on them. Hey, bring it on. I will love to see who will win. I mean these are the two most feared enemies of the Doctor and they want to battle it out to the end. Well, that is what happens in Army of Ghost/Doomsday. This was a great story to bring to Doctor Who and it happens in the revived series.
The next time we see the Cybermen is The Next Doctor. This episode is not as interesting to me. It does not grab my attention the way the last one did. Watching it makes me think weird. The guy on the show knowns as the Doctor is not our Doctor. I can’t really follow it very well so I don’t have much to say about it.
Steven Moffat becomes the showrunner in 2010. While there is a change in showrunners, there isn’t a change in origins of the Cybermen.(2) I am still looking for an original origins but can’t get it. Come on man, it is important to me and maybe others that you stick to the original claims. Ok, I remember the story around “The Pandorica Opens” in 2010, and really did not like it. I guess to some extent it is good to bring all the Doctor’s enemies into one story, but really man. It brings suspense, but that is about all. As I watch it, try to guess what is going on and have a hard time. Consequently you lose me a little bit.
There are other appearances of the Cybermen with Moffat as showrunner. I believe he knows how important they are to the show. I like this and even if I do not always understand the show for a and episode or two it is good for the show. These metal men seem to show up when the Doctor really does not need the to. They give the new Doctors problems that he can solve, even though they seem a little more dangerous every time they appear.
Steven Moffat adds to the Cybermen legacy with al the stories involving them. There are seven episodes with the Cybermen. I fin that awesome because I can see them allot. I know the Doctor hates to see them because they are always up to no good when he finds them. BUt this one enemy I can’t get enough.
