Ratings

Ratings are something the Television industry counts on. From what I have read over the past few months, Doctor Who’s ratings and viewership is not what the BBC wants. The BBC has for the tenth season now released a second trailer. I personally can’t remember them doing this for the past two seasons, This is the case for even those before this one.

I realize this is the final season for both Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi. Since they Moffat announced he will not return, the BBC has been vocal about a new era for Doctor Who. I believe the reason for this is the ratings for Doctor Who are not where they want them. I figure that when David Tennant is the Doctor the ratings are exceptional. Then we have the Matt Smith era, and I can say they may not be as good as Tennant’s. Now,I do not truly know this, but for me I do not like Smith as much as Tennant.

Now we come to Peter Capaldi, and there are a few problems with his writing. I never realize or even think about it like this til I read another fans comments. Because of these comments, I see some problems with the writing of the program. This does not mean I dislike the show, but it does shed some light on things. The BBC sees less sale of merchandise and less viewers, and they want change. Moffat seeming had the stories revolve around Clara rather than the Doctor. As a result, the viewers really don’t want to here more about the companion than the Doctor. This is a problem, and whether Moffat will admit to it or not is another story.

After I read this statement, I think about the last episode of season 9. It is at that point I realize that the whole time Clara is with the Doctor. The stories are all about her. The ratings for the show are hurt by this. As a fan, I want to hear about the Doctor and not the companion. This may be the biggest reason for the ratings being worse than before. Now there could be other reasons as well. Therefore, I can look at the writing and the writers. This can also be a big part of the reason for lower ratings.

Now, to tell the truth the 2 trailers that are available are amazing. They make me hunger for the release of season 10. I am so ready for the new season and what will come in the future. I hope that Chris Chibnall picks a great actor for the Doctor, but that he choses great writers, companions, and runs the show properly. This does not mean I won’t continue to watch the show because I am a Doctor Who junky, but this iconic show deserves only the best stories, actors, writer, and producers.
