James Bond
Okay, this article is a little old, but I did find this interesting. Of course, anyone associated with Doctor Who thinks it is the best, right. Well, Matt Smith went a little farther and said that James Bond doesn’t have anything on Doctor Who.
Now, I like James Bond even though I haven’t watched any since Roger Moore left. So, I suppose I am not that much of a fan of James Bond. I can see where Smith is coming from in his comments. With James Bond, you have a spy who always gets the girl, has cool weapons, is a hero, and never loses.
I agree with Smith because although Bond is cool, but he can’t compete with the Doctor in some ways. Bond does have some things which are close, but he never reaches the heights of the Doctor. The characters are close to the same age as far as creation is concerned. But there are some differences which separate them.
If you watch both programs, you can see that the faces of both characters change. But one does not use the change to live longer. Regeneration is a part of Doctor Who and allows the Doctor to live longer. This aspect of Doctor Who is not spoken about in James Bond. James Bond’s face changes but that isn’t a part of the storyline as with the Doctor.
Something else which stands out is the fact Bond is human, and the Doctor is an alien. Now, both characters are cool in their own right, but the Doctor being an alien is cooler. Anyone who is a fan of both should agree. But you may not, and I am cool with that. For me the Doctor being an alien trumps Bond being human. Most people will agree with me on that one.
Another big difference is the fact the Doctor travels through time and space. When has Bond been to a different planet or even been at a historical event? He hasn’t and will never do anything like that because he doesn’t have a time machine or spaceship. Yeah, Bond does have some of the coolest cars and gadgets around, but not anything like the TARDIS.
One other thing I agree with Smith on is the fact the Doctor fights aliens. We will never see James Bond fight aliens, or at least I don’t believe he will. Fighting aliens is one of the things which makes Doctor Who so cool. Since the Doctor can traverse both time and space, he meets historical men and women and faces evil aliens from all ends of the universe.
In conclusion, both James Bond and the Doctor are great characters, but the Doctor has a few things which make him better than James Bond. Now, as a Whovian, I am going to side with the Doctor on this, but both are cool characters. It is just there are a few things which make the Doctor cooler.
