Doctor Who Revenue

Okay, the merger of BBC Studios and BBC Worldwide is a move to maximize Doctor Who revenue.  According to this article, Tony Hall has given warnings that a merger needs to happen. The television industry is changing rapidly with the rise of Netflix, Amazon, and Apple. Therefore Hall recommends this merger.

Hall tells us that some of the programs for both organizations will suffer losses of around 20% over the next 10 years. This will allow the BBC to generate global sale from Doctor Who and other in house programs.(1) I believe that Doctor Who is most likely one of the BBC biggest revenue producing programs and this will make the revenue grow.

Now, whether this means we cannot see Doctor Who on youtube or Amazon or just what. I do not know what they are thinking here. Right now Amazon and Youtube are the only places outside of Britbox that we can watch nu who. This of course really sucks for the classic who lovers. We have to subscribe to Britbox to see any of the classic Who.

I also believe is a move because the BBC is already seeing some drop in revenue so they must make a change. Everything in our world requires money and if you are not making money it goes away. The BBC has a big money maker in Doctor Who, but they think they can make more from the show. Now, I am going to say I am ignorant when it comes to the financial side of television. About all I know is that the have businesses pa for commercials to make money. Yeah, I know I am very ignorant.

What do know though is if something isn’t making money it is cancelled. This is why Doctor was cancelled in 1989. Thanks to love of Doctor Who of Russell T Davies the show lives again. I also know that the viewing audiences has not been what they have hopes for and that they are making changes to try and raise viewing numbers.

I certainly hope this merger and the changes taking place will move the show in a positive direction. Without having any experience in these matters I cannot make a real good assessment. The people in charge of the BBC and all of its parts are the ones who know what to do and I hope they make the right choices. Because without the right choices there is the possibility of losing our favorite programs from the BBC. This may include Doctor Who.
