Spiders
Arachnids in the UK to some fans may be scary? The fact the Doctor and his companions find spiders of that size is frightening. Fans know it is fiction, but is there a real possibility of spiders getting to be that large. The toxic waste people dump to does not cause spiders or animals to mutate, so the likelihood of seeing spiders the size of the queen is impossible. You may not even see spiders the size of the babies. (1)
Anyone who watches the story will be blown away ar how large the arachnids are. Watching it will give some people the creeps while others will say I have seen this before. The only other movie to come to mind is Eight-legged Freaks. So, what fans saw was different, but older fans remember Jon Pertwee’s last episode, Planet of the Spiders. Then in recent history the Tenth Doctor and Donna as well a the Twelfth Doctor had run-ins with arachnids.
Of course, the story starts rather slow. It seems innocent enough. The Doctor is trying to return her companions to Earth. Well, she still doesn’t know how to fly the TARDIS very well, but they do land outside of Yaz’s apartment. So, for once the Doctor does get back like 30 minutes after she left.
The Doctor and her crew meet Yaz’s parents and sister and discover something is wrong. But there aren’t any spiders webs, but Yaz’s neighbor did. The Doctor and Ryan run into a scientist Dr. Jade McIntyre, A scientist who tells them about how the arachnids are acting differently. Well, the three of them enter Jade’s co-worker’s apartment to discover her co-worker, Anna, dead and in a cocoon. They also find a huge spider.
Well, this is not the only one of these arachnids. An American by the name of Robertson seems to be the one at the center of the problem. He has been dumping toxic waste which is a big problem with his hotel opening soon. He wants her to take care of and make go away. Robertson is your common rich man on television. He wants what he wants and will do anything to get it, but this time his problem is too big to cover up.
To be such a mean man, he is a coward. He does not care about the UK or what it takes to get the hotel open. But he hinds and scurries away when faced with all the arachnids. How else do you think he will react? Well, in the end, he kills the queen and makes the Doctor mad. She wants to help but is not allowed to because of Robertson’s actions.
In the end, the Doctor prevails. The arachnids are taken care of, and the crew stays together to travel to more new places and meet more new people and aliens.
The story was good and kept fans on the edge of their seats. The mixture of family and the problem of the large pests is good. Then it is not a Doctor Who story without a villain. But Robertson in many ways does not fit the bill. Yeah, he is mean, but at the same time, he is a coward. The story is not that scary, but the storyline is okay.
Those spiders are outstanding and scary, especially the queen. The ending is sad because the queen is in such pain. The Doctor sees it and wants to help, but Robertson does not allow her. Which is sad, because he is more worried about the money than the creature his toxic waste created.
The real sad part is there are people like Robertson all over the world. Those who don’t care who or what they hurt to get rich. The story is only a small look into people like that and their ways of taking care of business. Money is everything to them and they don’t care who they hurt.
