Rose

Rose actually begins in the new era of Doctor Who in a little different way. RTD starts the story off with Rose, but that does seem obvious because of the title of the episode. We don’t see the Doctor until she is looking for someone who works at the department store she works. While she is looking for him, dummies used to display the clothes for sale come alive and begin to move and chase the Doctor and her.

This episode brings back an old foe in the Autons. A Nestine consciousness controls plastic dummies that go by the name of Autons. The idea of the story is great and the flow of the story is good.

The interaction between Rose and her boyfriend Mickey makes things interesting. Then Jackie, Rose’s mom does something out of place. To me, there is not any need for a sexual advance on the Doctor by Jackie. As a result, this was the only part I did not consider as great.

During the story, we get a good introduction to the Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston. We see he will be a fantastic Doctor, and find out some new information about him and the Time Lords. The emotions we see from the Doctor are well placed and used by RTD.

Becuase of The Time War the Doctor is the Last Time Lord. This would make anyone emotional, maybe even to the point of tears. Eccleston handles it very well. With everything the Doctor does and tells Rose, it seems she is bitten by the Doctor. She is curious and wants to go where he goes. He has lots to teach her and she seems willing to learn.

I love the relationship the two gain in this episode. The relationship seems like that of a teacher and student. It takes me back to the classic series where the Doctor cares for his companion and wants to be a father figure to them.

I love the way the Doctor is thinking on his feet and trying to figure out what is going on what he will do to defeat the Nestines. Of course, he always has a plan and finds a way to win. He and Rose sort through a lot of information to find where the Nestine consciousness is. The use of the giant Ferris wheel in London is an awesome thought of RTD. But that would be the most obvious place to use to transmit the signal to control the dummies.

The Doctor always knows what to do and creates anti-plastic to throw on the Nestine consciousness. This destroys the being and saves Earth.

In conclusion, the story is very likable and worth watching again and again. A recommendation will come from me to watch this story. RTD did a great job on the first story as he introduces the Ninth Doctor and his new companion Rose.
