New Era
A new era begins this fall for Doctor Who and its fans. Fans will see a female Doctor for the first time, along with a new production crew lead by Chris Chibnall. As the new season begins, the BBC hopes the ratings for Doctor Who will be better than the last few seasons.
Some fans may believe the show has performed well enough over the last few seasons, but the numbers don’t lie. Now, I have not seen any of the numbers, but from everything I hear, they were not good enough for the BBC. Therefore a change was necessary. The changes take place because Steven Moffat, as well as Peter Capaldi, call it quits.
Apparently, some fans don’t watch Doctor Who and the reasons why can be many. Therefore, as a fan, I can only say why I might stop watching.
As a Whovian, watching Doctor Who is something I love. There are times when the shows are not that great, but I watch them anyway. But where I lost some interest was while Clara was the companion. As the impossible girl, she was great, but when she becomes just Clara everything changes. The stories seem to revolve around her rather than the Doctor.
Now, there are some fans and critics say that Moffat’s arcs and material are hard to follow and understand. Therefore, some fans may give that as a reason for leaving. Then, there may be other reasons as well. For me to know, I will need to talk to them. Well, that is not happening so I must leave it at that.
Some fans say they will not watch Doctor Who with a female Doctor. They believe the Doctor should be a man and not a woman. Well, everyone has their opinion, but if they do not watch the show any longer, but everything will be fine.
The BBC hopes to gain new viewers in the process of making the changes. The new era began with the TARDIS exploding and throwing the Doctor out. Some fans got a laugh out of it. The changes are to help gain viewers and keep some of the old Whovians as well. We cannot go into the new season with a closed mind. Yeah, the Doctor is a woman, but we need to give her a chance. Some fans may not even know who Whittaker is and will enjoy watching her as the Doctor.
In conclusion, the BBC has a lot riding on the wholesale changes made to Doctor Who. Fans hope the show returns to what it was when David Tennant was the Doctor. What we will get is unknown at this time, but there are expectations. Meaning we hope for good Doctor Who this fall.
