American Doctor

Since Whoopi Goldberg told the Mirror that she called out on a chance to be the first female Doctor, the is a question to ask. Will the showrunner or casting director ever cast an American Doctor? Well, there may be some who desire this, but for some of the older fans, it is something they will not want.

Doctor Who is a British phenomenon and for many of the older fans it is just wrong to have an American play the Doctor. The response to casting an American as the Doctor will bring as much resistance if not more than changing to a female. The idea may have some merit, but it just does not seem like a good idea. Now, some people might say it can work, because there are some Americans who are very qualified for the role.

For me, just being qualified is not enough. Doctor Who is an institution and changing nationality is something to help the show. Everyone knows Eric Roberts played the Master in Doctor Who the movie, but that was the Master and not the Doctor. The thought of having an American as the Doctor does not seem right.  Some may say we are missing out n something because they have never had someone from the US to play the Doctor.  Some America fans may say why not. It sounds like a good idea.

Yeah, an American might bring something new and different to the role, but would it be good for Doctor Who? As an older fan, it does not seem to be a direction the show should go. It may be more detrimental to Doctor Who than beneficial. Of course, the BBC and fans won’t know the answer unless it happens.

Will this ever happen? Fans never thought a female would be the Doctor, so you can’t say an American will play the Doctor. But there may be a Doctor of color before there is an American to play the Doctor. That is unless the actor cast it an American of color.
