Agent

Doctor Who fans know the DNA of Doctor Who as being ever changing. The norm for the show is that every 3 or 4 years there are cast changes as well prop and travel changes. There seems to different planets and aliens every year. So, Steven Moffat was asked the question “Is the showrunner’s duty to be an agent of change?”

Before I get into Moffat’s answer, let’s look at the changes we see from time to time. Doctor changes every few years and some fans get upset about the change. We hope that any changes made by the showrunner are good for Doctor Who. There are some good and some bad.

Fans of Doctor Who may see the showrunner as an agent of change, and from their viewpoint that is how it looks. But Moffat does not answer the question in the affirmative, but emphatically answers no. Then gives the duty of the showrunner as being to make good Doctor Who.

Ok, making good Doctor Who is what fans expect from the showrunner. Therefore, according to Steven that is what he was supposed to do as the showrunner. Fans should like his answer to the question. Moffat did make some good Doctor Who at times, but then as with other showrunners, he had his bad times.

The fan’s expectations are always to have good Doctor Who, and that is what all showrunners should strive to have. But there will be times that they fail to produce good Doctor Who. Failing to make good shows is part of the process. So, there will be bad Doctor Who.

Good Doctor Who is all these fans want. They see the changes in the show and just go with the flow. They continue to watch as long as it the shows are good. All of us who love Doctor Who, desire the best shows the showrunner can produce. We want shows that grab our attention and keeps us glued to the television screen for a half-hour or hour.

Moffat was right the changes are the reason Doctor Who is still around. Changes must take place for anything to remain and the changes over the fifty-four almost fifty-five years are the reason we fans still have Doctor Who.
